Meet the Team – Janine Miller, general manager
For the first instalment of our ‘meet the team’ blog series, we would like to introduce you to the lovely Janine Miller, our friendly general manager.
Janine hails from Warrington, Cheshire, but now calls Kirkby Lonsdale home – and has a very short two minute commute to her job at the Sun Inn!
We sat down with Janine to discuss her changing roles at the Sun Inn, her passion for mountain biking and the celebrity guests she’s looked after over the years.
First things first, what’s your poison?
It would have to be a gin and tonic or a fruity red – I really like the torre dei vescovi pinot nero we have here.
Tell us about how and why you made the move from Cheshire to Kirkby Lonsdale.
I am originally from Warrington, Cheshire. It was there that I met Mark Fuller, the previous owner of the Sun Inn, while working at the De Vere Daresbury Park hotel – he was the general manager at the time. I was offered the job as supervisor at the Sun Inn after coming to work here for a day when they had recently won the newcomer of the year award in 2007.
How have your roles changed at the Sun Inn since joining the team 11 years ago?
Since then I have worked my way up through different roles within the business. While I was on maternity leave last year, the Sun Inn was bought by Iain and Jenny Black. They approached me while I was off and asked if I would consider returning as the general manager. I said yes and came back from maternity leave at the end of January this year. I have lots of great memories over the years – I helped the Inn to gain its fifth AA star and also secure its two rosettes for the restaurant.
Fantastic work! But it can’t be all work and no play, tell us a little bit about your life outside the Sun Inn…
I met my partner, Nick, while working at the Sun Inn. He shares my love of mountain biking and we had our first date at Whinlatter forest in Keswick, cycling the red trail. Last year, we had a baby girl called April. We also have a fur baby called Ellie, who is an 11-year-old chocolate labrador.
What do you love most about your role at the Sun Inn?
Since being back, I have enjoyed seeing all the locals and returning customers. It’s nice to see the same faces that I have got to know over the years. I like to see people come and enjoy themselves, and go away relaxed and happy. Here at the Sun Inn we are a close knit team, who are known for our welcoming and friendly service. I feel that the Sun Inn and Kirkby Lonsdale are now my second home and I have made many new friends and acquaintances in the last 11 years.
You must’ve seen your fair share of celebrity guests over the years too?
We’ve had Simon Rimmer, David Guest, John Prescott, Kevin Keegan, the cast of Emmerdale and Jennifer Ellison, to name just a few.
A day in the life of Janine Miller
Alarm goes off. I feed our dog and let her into the garden, I make April’s breakfast porridge and a cup of tea for myself. Then I feed April and sort out her nursery bag.
I get myself showered and dressed, ready for work. Then I get April dressed and we leave the house to take April to nursery at The Mulberry Bush in Casterton.
Walk the dog and eat my breakfast (usually a banana).
I head to work. I start by lighting the fires, setting up the bar area, getting the guests bills ready and then wash the breakfast dishes.
Set the tables, ready for lunch service.
Staff lunch at work before starting lunch service at noon.
Catch up on office work.
I pick April up from Nursery and we walk the dog
Time for April’s bath, she goes to bed at 8pm which is when I usually cook dinner and watch TV.
Shower and time for bed!
