Meet the team: Joe Yates, Food & Beverage Assistant

It’s summer time at the Sun Inn, and if you find yourself sipping an ice cold drink on a hot and sunny day to quench your thirst, then it might be our lovely Joe who serves you at the bar.

Joe Yates is food and beverage assistant at the Sun Inn – he works with the bar and restaurant team to ensure everything runs smoothly. 

Tell us a bit about yourself, Joe

I’m a recent University graduate, I lived in Lancaster for three years before I moved to Arkholme – five miles from Kirkby – one year ago.

How long have you worked at the Sun Inn?

I have worked at the Sun Inn for four months, since March. 

What are your main responsibilities and what’s the best bit about your job?

I often work as a waiter in the restaurant and I also open the bar and help out on breakfasts for residents a few times a week. The best thing about working here is working as part of a team with the other staff.

What’s your favourite thing about the Sun Inn?

My favourite things about the Sun Inn are the history and the location of the building. The church next door is picturesque and the town is too. The Inn’s building gives away points of interest throughout its history.

What’s your favourite tipple and your favourite food choice off the menu?

My favourite drink is gin and lemonade. And food is the homemade black pudding.

Why do you think the Sun Inn is such a popular venue in the town?

I think the Sun is so popular due to the relaxed atmosphere, great location and delicious food.

Can you tell us a surprising fact about the Sun Inn?

It might surprise people that the Sun Inn has around 25 members of staff.

What do you like the most about Kirkby Lonsdale?

My favourite thing about Kirkby Lonsdale is the market street running through the town. It has lots of shops to browse and looks lovely.

A day in the life of Joe

Morning

If I’m working the breakfast shift, my alarm is set for 7am. A cup of coffee sets me up for the day and a bowl of porridge keeps me going. My mornings involve serving breakfast, setting the bar up, checking customers out and giving a hand with the washing up. For lunch, I get whatever the chefs decide to make – it’s always delicious!

Afternoon

In the afternoon, I continue serving customers and working behind the bar. I check new guests in and prepare the restaurant for the evening. I usually finish at 4pm. Then in the evenings, I relax and either socialise with friends or see my boyfriend. I tend to have something easy for dinner – I leave cooking to the chefs!
