Paws for Thought – 4 pawesome ways to celebrate National Pet Month

By Charlie Black, head pooch at the Sun Inn

My tail hasn’t stopped wagging lately. Why? Because April is National Pet Month!

Although I’m lucky to be spoilt every day of the year – whether I’m curling up in front of the fire in the Sun Inn bar, or helping myself to the delicious doggy treats we have here – National Pet Month has been pawsitively pawesome.

The month is designated to promote responsible pet ownership and to highlight how, in return for a loving home, a pet provides lifelong companionship. Here are my fur, sorry, FOUR, favourite ways you can celebrate it…

1.Fundraise for animal charities

Many humans all around the country have been hosting events to fundraise for animal welfare charities. There are a host of charities doing amazing work for pets, including the RSPCA, National Animal Welfare Trust and Blue Cross – to name just a few. You could even involve your four-legged friend in your fundraising fun. Trust me, we’d love to take part in a sponsored dog walk and a cupcake (or pupcake) sale!

2. Enjoy a weekend getaway, and take us with you!

I don’t know how the cats feel, but take it from me, us dogs don’t like you going away without us (I know, we hide it well…) Luckily, if you decide to stay in my stomping ground of the Sun Inn, in Kirkby Lonsdale, you can bring your dog with you! Your pooch will feel totally pampered, thanks to the complimentary welcome pack which includes a fluffy towel, a lovely dog bowl and a scrumptious doggy treat. There’s also a dog trail map showing lots of brilliant walks, with plenty of nice sights (and smells).

3. A healthy pet is a happy pet

This month also serves as a reminder for pet health. We can’t talk to you (try as we might) so if we seem a little under the weather, or we’re not quite our usual waggy-tailed selves, it’s worth a visit to the vet for a routine check-up, just to make sure everything is tickety-boo. A quick examination can also highlight common issues, such as dental hygiene. National Pet Month is also the perfect reminder to check your pet’s microchip information and update your contact details, if necessary. We dogs can have a tendency to wander off if we pick up an intriguing smell, or spot a rabbit we fancy chasing, and microchips can play a potentially life-saving role in us returning to our homes and humans.

4. Rustle up some homemade treats

I bet you’re rolling your eyes and thinking ‘typical Labrador, always has food on the brain’. While that might be true, (you’d be the same if you were smelling the delicious aromas from the Sun Inn kitchen 24/7!) making some pet-friendly treats is a fun and simple way to spoil us. There are some great recipes online for dog treats using leftover meat and vegetables, and I’ve heard cats love fishy snacks, while feathered friends would go mad for homemade bird seed.

Our treats at the Sun Inn will certainly put a wag in your tail!
